Why Am I Getting Acne from Working Out?

Why Am I Getting Acne from Working Out?

Working out is a crucial aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We all know that exercising regularly can do wonders not just for our physical health but also for our mental well-being. However, for some of us, the sweat and heat caused by an intense workout can cause unwanted visitors on our skin- acne. You may be wondering why working out is giving you acne, and we are here to help you understand this phenomenon.

Firstly, when you work out, your body temperature rises, and you sweat more. Sweating helps your body eliminate toxins, but it also means that there is more humidity on your skin, which can contribute to clogged pores and, in turn, acne breakouts. Moreover, wearing tight-fitting workout clothes made of synthetic fabrics can contribute to skin irritation, especially if you don't shower immediately after exercising.

Secondly, your workout gear could be contributing to your acne. While workout clothes are designed to wick away sweat and moisture from the body, they can also attract bacteria. If you don't wash them after every use, these bacteria can thrive and cause acne. Additionally, using dirty equipment or mats at the gym can also expose your skin to bacteria, contributing to acne.

Thirdly, some of the ingredients that we consume before or after a workout could also be contributing to acne. Foods that are high in iodine, such as kelp, seafood, and dairy products, can trigger acne. Consuming supplements like whey protein or creatine, in which doses are often increased during exercise regimes, may also contribute to acne. You might want to consider reducing or eliminating these foods or supplements from your diet.

Lastly, hormonal factors also play a significant role in acne breakouts. When you work out, the body releases endorphins, which are hormones that make us feel good. However, exercising can also elevate other hormones such as testosterone, which can increase the production of sebum in our skin. Excess sebum production, paired with bacterial growth and clogged pores, can cause acne breakouts.

When it comes to working out, a few simple changes can make a big difference in preventing acne breakouts. Firstly, be sure to wash your face and body immediately after a workout. Secondly, wear loose-fitting clothes made of natural fabrics like cotton. Thirdly, eliminate or reduce foods and supplements that contribute to acne. Lastly, consult your dermatologist for treatment options if your acne persists. By making these small changes, you can continue to enjoy the benefits of working out without the added stress of acne breakouts.
