The Top 3 Causes of Period-Related Breakouts—and What You Can Do About Them

If you've ever wondered why you get breakouts right before your period, you're not alone. In fact, this time of the month is such a common time for breakouts that there's even a name for it: premenstrual acne, or PMS-related acne. While the cause of PMS-related acne isn't completely understood, there are a few theories out there. Here are the three most popular ones—along with what you can do to help manage your breakouts.

 
1. Hormone fluctuations. One of the most likely causes of PMS-related breakouts is fluctuating hormone levels. Estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate throughout your menstrual cycle, and when they dip just before your period, it can cause an increase in oil production—which can lead to breakouts. Birth control pills can help regulate hormone levels, which may in turn help reduce breakouts.

2. Increased stress levels. Stress can also trigger or worsen breakouts by causing an increase in the hormone cortisol. When cortisol levels increase, it signals your body to produce more oil—which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. To help manage stress levels, consider adding some stress-relieving activities to your routine, such as yoga or meditation.

3. Dietary changes. What you eat can also have an effect on your skin—and not necessarily in a good way. For example, sugar and refined carbs can cause blood sugar spikes, which can lead to inflammation and breakouts. Eating a nutritious diet and keeping sugar intake in check may help improve your skin—and your overall health!
