How to Deal With the Most Dreaded Fall Problem—Breakouts!

How to Deal With the Most Dreaded Fall Problem—Breakouts!

It's that time of year again. The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and your skin is a disaster. That's right, it's prime time for breakouts. If you're dealing with a sudden influx of zits, you're not alone; according to dermatologists, breakouts are most common in the fall. But why is that?

Well, there are a few reasons. For one, the change in seasons can disrupt your skin's natural balance, leading to dryness and inflammation. And when your skin is inflamed, it's more likely to produce excess oil, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Additionally, seasonal allergies can also trigger breakouts, as can stress (which let's be honest, is pretty much inevitable this time of year).

So what can you do about it? First things first: don't panic! While breakouts may be annoying, they're mostly harmless and they definitely don't mean you're doomed to a life of bad skin. In fact, there are plenty of things you can do to help clear up your complexion. Read on for some tips from dermatologists on how to banish breakouts this fall.

Use Gentle Cleansers
When it comes to cleansing your face, less is more. Harsh cleansers can strip away the natural oils that keep your skin healthy, leading to dryness and irritation—two things that are major breakout triggers. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser that won't dry out your skin. If your skin tends to be on the oily side, look for a foaming cleanser; if it's more dry or sensitive, try a cream-based cleanser. And no matter what type of cleanser you use, make sure you're being gentle when you wash your face; scrubbing vigorously will only aggravate your skin.

Exfoliate Regularly
In order to prevent breakouts (and encourage cell turnover), it's important to exfoliate regularly. This will help get rid of dead skin cells that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. However, it's important not to overdo it; exfoliating too frequently can irritate your skin and make breakouts worse. Once or twice a week should suffice; any more than that and you risk irritating your skin. When exfoliating, be sure to use gentle circular motions and avoid scrubbing too hard; again, this will only aggravate your skin.

Don't Pick at Your Skin
This one may seem obvious, but it bears repeating: don't pick at your skin! Picking at pimples will only make them worse—it can cause inflammation and scarring that will take longer to heal than the pimple itself would have. So resist the urge to pick (no matter how tempting it may be), and let those pimples run their course. Trust us—you'll be glad you did in the long run.
