Could Some of Your Favorite Thanksgiving Dishes Be the Cause of Your Holiday Breakouts?

Could Some of Your Favorite Thanksgiving Dishes Be the Cause of Your Holiday Breakouts?

When the leaves start to change color and the air gets crisp, that can only mean one thing: breakouts. As the weather cools down, so does our skin. The chilly temperatures and dry air strip our skin of its natural oils, leaving it vulnerable to dehydration, redness, and—you guessed it—breakouts.

But it's not just the weather that's to blame for our post-Thanksgiving breakouts. There are certain foods that can trigger breakouts or make existing blemishes worse. Here are four fall foods that you should be aware of if you're trying to avoid holiday breakouts.

1. Pumpkin Pie
Pumpkin pie is a holiday staple, but it's also a prime offender when it comes to causing breakouts. pumpkin puree is packed with vitamin A, which plays an important role in cell turnover and keeping our skin smooth and blemish-free. However, too much vitamin A can actually have the opposite effect by causing our skin to produce too much sebum (oil), leading to clogged pores and breakouts. So, enjoy your slice of pumpkin pie—just don't go overboard.

2. Cranberry Sauce
Cranberry sauce is another Thanksgiving favorite that can cause problems for our skin. Cranberries are high in sugar, which can feed the bacteria that causes acne and lead to breakouts. They're also acidic, which can irritate existing blemishes and make them worse. If you love cranberry sauce, try to limit your intake or look for a sugar-free version.

3. Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are a delicious and nutritious addition to any holiday meal. However, they're also high in glucose, which can trigger inflammation and lead to breakouts. Sweet potatoes are also often cooked with dairy products like butter or cream, which can further irritate the skin and contribute to breakouts. So, if you're prone to blemishes, you may want to steer clear of sweet potatoes this Thanksgiving.

4. Stuffing
Stuffing is another holiday favorite that can cause problems for our skin—specifically, because it contains breadcrumbs as one of its main ingredients. Breadcrumbs are high in gluten, which can trigger inflammation in people who are sensitive to it. Gluten can also cause your gut bacteria to become imbalanced, leading to toxins being released into your bloodstream and eventually making their way to your skin in the form of breakouts. If you're trying to avoid holiday breakouts, stuffing may not be the best choice for you .

Breakouts are no fun at any time of year, but they seem to be especially common during the holidays. If you're trying to avoid blemishes this season, be aware of these four fall foods that can cause breakouts: pumpkin pie , cranberry sauce , sweet potatoes ,and stuffing . Enjoy your favorite holiday dishes—just don't overdo it!
