Why "Probably" is the Key Word in Probiotics and Skin Care

Why

You've probably seen probiotics in your skincare products and though, "huh, that's new." And you're not wrong—probiotics are a relatively new addition to the world of skin care. But what exactly are they, and do they actually work? Let's take a closer look at probiotics and see if they can probably help your skin in some small way.

What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms (a.k.a. bacteria) that are similar to the ones that naturally occur in your body. When applied to the skin, they can help to restore the balance of good bacteria. Probiotics have been shown to have a number of benefits, including reducing inflammation and boosting immunity.

Do Probiotics Work?

The jury is still out on whether or not probiotics actually work when applied to the skin. There is some evidence to suggest that they can help to treat certain skin conditions like eczema, but more research is needed. That being said, even if probiotics don't have a direct effect on the skin, they are still safe to use and may help to improve overall gut health, which can indirectly improve skin health.

Should You Use Probiotics?

If you're considering adding probiotics to your skincare routine, it's probably best to start with a product that contains just a small amount of live bacteria. A lot of skincare products containing probiotics make bold claims about their effects on the skin, but it's important to remember that these claims are not backed up by science. Probiotics are safe to use, so if you want to give them a try, go ahead—but don't expect miracles.
