The Not-So-Lovely Return of Monthly Hormonal Acne

The Not-So-Lovely Return of Monthly Hormonal Acne

For many women, their worst monthly nightmare isn't their period—it's the return of hormonal acne. Every month like clockwork, you can count on a few blemishes to sprout up around your chin and jawline. And no matter what you do, they seem impossible to get rid of. So why does this happen, and more importantly, what can you do about it? Let's take a closer look.

What Causes Hormonal Acne?
Hormonal acne is caused by an increase in androgens (male sex hormones) during the days leading up to your period. These hormones cause the glands in your skin to produce more oil than usual, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Additionally, hormonal changes can also make your skin cells turn over faster than normal, which can result in inflammation and irritation.

How to Treat Hormonal Acne
Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to prevent hormonal acne from occurring in the first place. However, there are a few things you can do to help manage it. First, it's important to keep your skin clean by washing twice a day with a mild cleanser and warm water. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can irritate delicate skin and make breakouts worse. You should also use products that are non-comedogenic (meaning they won't clog pores) and oil-free to help keep your skin from getting too greasy. And last but not least, be sure to resist the temptation to pick or pop pimples, as this can lead to scarring.

If you're looking for a more long-term solution, getting the right skincare products as well as regular facials will help keep your skin clear.

Dealing with monthly breakouts is frustrating enough—but when those breakouts seem to be linked to your period, it can feel downright defeating. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to help manage hormonal acne and keep your skin looking its best. So don't despair—the next time you see a blemish creeping up on your chin, remember that you've got this!
