Fall into Good Skin Care Practices

Fall into Good Skin Care Practices

The leaves are changing colors, the air is getting chillier, and pumpkin spice everything is back—yep, fall is here! As temperature start to drop, our skin care routines need to adapt too. Here are a few tips and tricks (and foods to avoid) to help you keep your skin looking flawless all season long.

Cold Weather = Dry Skin
One of the most common skin problems people experience in the fall and winter is dry skin. The colder weather outside combined with the dry heat inside can strip the skin of its natural moisture, resulting in a lackluster complexion. To prevent your skin from turning into a flaky disaster, make sure you’re doing the following:

-Drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep skin hydrated from the inside out
-Applying a hydrating moisturizer immediately after cleansing while skin is still damp
-Exfoliating weekly to remove dead skin cells and allow moisturizer to better penetrate
-Using a humidifier in your bedroom at night to add moisture back into the air
-Avoiding HOT showers—opt for lukewarm water instead and don’t stay in for more than 10 minutes
-Wearing lip balm or ChapStick regularly to prevent chapped lips

Breakouts Aren’t Just For Teenagers

While breakouts are often thought of as a plight of adolescence, anyone can experience them at any age. And guess what? Breakouts love cold weather just as much as we do—in fact, they’re most common in the fall and winter months. The main culprit? Sugar. That’s right, all those holiday parties and pumpkin spice lattes can wreak havoc on our complexions. To avoid falling victim to seasonal breakouts:

-Limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks—we know it’s hard, but your skin will thank you!
-Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser and make sure you’re using products that are appropriate for your skin type (oily, dry, combination, etc.)
-Don’t forget to exfoliate! Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells that can contribute to clogged pores and breakouts. Just be sure not to overdo it—exfoliating more than 2-3 times per week can actually do more harm than good.

Fall may be one of the best seasons of the year, but it doesn’t come without its challenges—especially when it comes to our skin care routines. By following these simple tips, you can avoid dryness, breakouts, and all other sorts of common complexion problems and enjoy all that this time of year has to offer with confidence!
