5 Foods to Avoid If You Have Rosacea

5 Foods to Avoid If You Have Rosacea

If you have rosacea, you know that there are certain triggers that can cause flare-ups. Some of those triggers are environmental, like changes in weather or windy conditions. Others are more internal, like stress or anxiety. And still others are lifestyle related, like drinking alcohol or exercise.

But did you know that certain foods can also trigger rosacea flare-ups? If you're struggling to control your rosacea, avoiding these 5 foods may help.

1. Spicy Foods  Whether it's a jalapeno pepper or a habanero chili, spicy foods contain a substance called capsaicin. Capsaicin is what gives peppers their heat, and it's also a common ingredient in topical creams and ointments used to treat various conditions like arthritis and nerve pain.

Capsaicin can cause vasodilation, which is the widening of blood vessels. For people with rosacea, this can lead to increased redness and inflammation. So if you want to avoid a flare-up, it's best to stay away from spicy foods.

2. Hot Drinks  Whether you like your drinks piping hot or just lukewarm, it's best to avoid hot beverages if you have rosacea. That's because hot drinks can cause facial flushing, which is one of the most common symptoms of rosacea.

So instead of reaching for that cup of coffee or tea first thing in the morning, try starting your day with a tall glass of cold water instead. Your skin will thank you for it!

3. Dairy Products  Dairy products are another common trigger for rosacea flare-ups. Milk, cheese, and yogurt all contain a type of protein called casein. Casein is known to cause inflammation, which can aggravate rosacea symptoms like redness and swelling.

Dairy products are also high in saturated fat, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts—something no one wants to deal with!  So if you're trying to keep your rosacea under control, it's best to avoid dairy products as much as possible.

4. Citrus Fruits  Lemons, oranges, grapefruits—they're all delicious and packed with nutrients like Vitamin C. But they're also citrus fruits, which means they're highly acidic.

And while a little bit of acidity is good for the skin (it helps exfoliate dead skin cells), too much acidity can irritate and inflame the skin—not something you want if you have rosacea!  So if citrus fruits are triggering your flare-ups, it's best to cut them out of your diet altogether.

5 Alcoholic Beverages  We're not going to tell you to give up alcohol entirely (we know that's not realistic!). But if you have rosacea, it's important to limit your intake of alcoholic beverages—especially red wine . That's because alcohol is a known trigger for rosacea flare-ups . It dilates blood vessels and causes inflammation , both of which can make your symptoms worse . So if you do drink alcohol , be sure to do so in moderation . Conclusion: If you have rosacea , certainTriggering foods can cause flare-ups . spicy foods , hot drinks , dairy products , citrus fruits , and alcoholic beverages are all common triggers for people with rosacea . By avoiding These foods , you may be able To control your symptoms and prevent future flare-ups . Talk to your doctor about other dietary changes that may be helpful for managing your rosacea.
